Eliminate and Reduce
This should be your priority!
Have you considered any of the following measures that you could take? If so, have you
acted on any of them?
Your staff can be motivated by award schemes and spotlighting for individual and team
achievements in striving for reductions in emissions
Green travel plans for your staff commuting to work
- Encourage car-sharing, offer priority parking places for sharers
- Promote cycling to work, provide secure storage and shower/changing facilities
Eliminate non-essential business travel
- Batch together distant meetings to avoid duplicating long journeys
- Use video-conferencing wherever possible
Promote lower emission business travel
- Ensure that your vehicle fleet has the lowest emission engines available
- Time appointments to discourage fast driving
- Discourage flying when less polluting travel options are available and practical
- For example, a flight from London to Edinburgh would produce seven times the carbon
emissions generated by the equivalent rail journey
Energy reduction in your premises
- Switch to Ecotricity for ‘green’ electricity
- Use low energy light bulbs and A rated appliances
- Use IT equipment that meets Energy Star standards with automatic ‘sleep mode’
- Insulate your premises
- Examine all the separate elements of your energy consumption and challenge yourself to
eliminate or reduce non-essential usage
Reduce, re-use and recycle waste
- Work hard to find where you can reduce waste
- Don’t throw away when you could re-use
- Ensure that unavoidable waste is recycled
Purchase sustainable materials
- Source your materials as locally as possible to minimise transport emissions
- Choose green products, ensure all office printing paper is 100% recycled content
