There are many ways that you can change the world. There are many ways you can make a positive difference. The first thing you can do to fight climate crisis is to reduce your carbon footprint. Make sure you tell and encourage everyone you know to do the same. You can vote for political parties that support your concern about the climate crisis.
The typical person in the UK will produce 10 tonnes a year of carbon emissions; in the US it is 24 tonnes. The way in which we make our footprint is typically like this:
Home = 50% of your carbon footprint
Heating the house and using electricity is 50% of your carbon footprint. Energy prices for gas and electricity are getting more expensive and so are our bills. The good news is that there are many ways to reduce the bills and your carbon footprint.
Getting around = 22% of your carbon footprint
Getting around is part of most of our lives. Whether you’re going to work, to school or to see your friends, it requires power. That power put lots of carbon into climate. You can do lots to reduce the impact and still do all you need to do.
Flying = 15% of your carbon footprint
Air travel and going to new parts of the world is fun. Unfortunately it is a big part of your carbon footprint. A return from London to New York would be the equivalent of putting 2 tonnes of carbon in the atmosphere.
There are many things you can do to reduce your carbon emission. Here are our tips to
reduce your carbon footprint and save you money.
1. Green Electricity
- Change to a provider that generates its electricity from a renewable energy source.
- Switching providers is easier than you think.
2. Don’t sweat it
- Turn the temperature down at home and work.
- Simply setting thermostat to be 1 C lower than normal saves energy and money.
- Add a layer. Put a jumper on instead of turning on the heater. Also you can put a jacket
or insulation around your boiler.
3. Getting around
- Take public transport to work:
Trains and buses are much more energy efficient than your car.
If you have to drive, try to share the journey with your colleagues.
- Holiday closer to home:
Your country is worth exploring, take one of your holidays at home.
Stay close to home. Short flights are much less damaging to the environment than long flights.
