Make A Difference
Climate change has emerged to become arguably the greatest challenge that we face as a global society.
The UK Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor has stated that he believes climate change is more dangerous to us than terrorism, and Prime Minister Tony Blair has declared that climate change is the greatest long term threat we face.
There is a broad consensus that Climate change is being primarily driven by unsustainable human activity and is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide and other polluting gases building up in the planet’s atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide is a so-called greenhouse gas, which naturally exists in the atmosphere and helps to keep the planet warm enough for life to exist. But by massively adding to the volume of carbon dioxide through burning ever increasing amounts of fossil fuels, too much heat is becoming trapped in the atmosphere. This is creating more extreme weather, melting of the ice caps, floods and droughts. In turn this threatens to cost the lives of millions, ruin the livelihoods of hundreds of millions more and severely affect animal and plant life across the globe.
The only way to avert this appalling legacy for our children and future generations is to make a huge reduction in our carbon emissions.
Tony Blair has committed the UK to reducing carbon emissions by 60% from 1990 levels by 2050. Ken Livingstone is planning to discourage gas guzzling cars with punitive congestion zone charges. In the UK we’re waking up to the challenge and beginning to take positive action, but carbon causes climate change regardless of which country it is produced in, and globally we are in deep trouble.
160 countries are committed to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol intended to cut global emissions, but some of the biggest polluters are not signatories; the United States and Australia refused to take part and both India and China are not bound by it, as developing countries.
We cannot rely on other governments to sort this mess out, to make a difference we must all take responsibility for our own individual actions.
As citizens we all contribute our share of carbon emissions with the decisions we take in our lifestyles and it is in all our hands to do something about it.
Driving a big engine 4 x 4 SUV to drop a couple of kids off on a school run is not an environmentally sustainable action, and justifying it on the grounds of crash safety and stowage space for musical instruments and sports kit is simply delusional.
Reduction and wherever possible elimination of carbon emissions should be your priority in aiming to become a carbon neutral citizen, for ideas and examples please take a look at Eliminate and Reduce page
For the remaining emissions resulting from your lifestyle you can use our website calculators to estimate the damage that they cause and to compensate for them using our offset Projects.
In becoming a carbon neutral citizen you will have taken positive action to ‘Make a Difference’. |
